Community Care Northumberland’s 8th Annual Adopt a Grandparent Program Begins
For the eighth consecutive year, Community Care Northumberland will support seniors throughout the county this holiday season through the Adopt a Grandparent Program.
This program spreads joy by surprising seniors who may be experiencing isolation or loneliness with meaningful gifts during the holiday season. Last year, Community Care Northumberland reached over 130 “grandparents” across Northumberland County.
Trish Baird, Chief Executive Officer for Community Care Northumberland, comments, “This program brings smiles of appreciation not only from our ‘Grandparents’ but from the many individuals and families who join together to support a holiday gift and from the volunteers and staff who deliver. Community Care Northumberland’s Adopt a Grandparent Program demonstrates the true spirit of the season and the generosity of our community.”
Mary, a past adopted grandparent, shared, “Thank you for my wonderful Christmas gift. It was an amazing surprise that made my Christmas so much brighter.” Another recipient, Jim, expressed his gratitude, saying, “Thank you for the Christmas gift, I was feeling down, and it made my spirits brighter! This gift meant so much to me. It brought happy tears to my eyes.” These heartfelt testimonials show the positive impact the program had on people during the holiday season, bringing joy and comfort when it was needed most.
This year, community members who are interested in adopting a grandparent can reach out to Community Care Northumberland by calling 1-866-514-5774 or emailing wellness@commcare.ca to be matched with a senior. Purchased gifts may be dropped off at a local office to be delivered to our “grandparents” by our volunteers the week before Christmas. Community Care Northumberland asks that all unwrapped gifts (gift bags or baskets are ok) be dropped off at a local office on or before Friday, December 6th. Additionally, individuals can “Adopt a Grandparent” by donating to the program, and Community Care Northumberland staff will do the shopping.
Community Care Northumberland kindly asks participants to refrain from including homemade baked goods. For any handmade items, such as scarves or mittens, please include washing instructions. Other gift suggestions include gift cards for local stores or gift certificates for Community Care Northumberland programs, such as Meals on Wheels or Transportation.
Community Care Northumberland CEO Trish Baird Announces Retirement After 36 Years of Service
After 36 remarkable years of leadership, Community Care Northumberland (CCN) shares the news that Chief Executive Officer Trish Baird will retire at the end of December 2025.
“It has been an honour to work in this organization, and more importantly, a real joy working with the volunteers, fellow employees and all the communities we support,” said Trish Baird, CEO of Community Care Northumberland.
Throughout her three-and-a-half-decade tenure, Trish has helped guide CCN’s transformation from a small grassroots initiative with a team of 12 staff and a few hundred volunteers into a dynamic, $6 million not-for-profit agency. Today, the organization supports the county with over 100 staff members and a committed volunteer team of more than 560 individuals.
“I am proud to be leaving this organization that is seen as a respected, trusted, multi-service agency that is a vital partner in the Northumberland community,” said Baird. “This journey has been possible because of the passion, commitment, and shared vision of everyone involved - staff, volunteers, community partners, and our dedicated Board.”
Under Baird’s leadership, CCN has significantly expanded its programs and services, adapting to the evolving needs of the community while staying true to its mission of providing support, service, and care throughout life’s journey.
The Board of Directors has engaged an executive search firm and will begin the recruitment process for Baird’s successor, with a commitment to ensuring a smooth and successful leadership transition.
“As I prepare for this next chapter, I am confident that the organization is well positioned for continued success. We have a strong leadership team in place, a committed staff, and a Board that truly understands and champions our mission,” said Baird.
Community Care Northumberland and the community at large extend their deepest thanks to Trish Baird for her decades of visionary leadership, unwavering dedication, and heartfelt service. Her impact on the organization and the lives of those it serves will be felt for many years to come. Her legacy is one of compassion, community connection, and a tireless commitment to ensuring that everyone across Northumberland County has access to the care and support they need.
“Under Trish’s guidance, Community Care Northumberland has grown into a vibrant and trusted organization that touches the lives of so many. Her commitment to kindness, collaboration, and innovation has been a driving force behind our success. We are deeply thankful for her many years of devoted leadership and the profound impact she has made on our community.” said Elaine Azzopardi, Board Chairperson, Community Care Northumberland.
