Free Exercise Programs

We have organized free exercise classes for seniors.  They are not intimidating and participants are encouraged to go at their own speed. Led by trained health care professionals selected by us, you will be asked to complete a screening questionnaire to help us ensure your safety before starting.  We offer this program in: Bewdley, Campbellford, Cobourg, Colborne, Hastings, Port Hope and Warkworth, Ontario.

Fitness Classes

Aquafit

Tone & Stretch - Therapeutic pool. This gentle aqua fitness class is intended for those with muscle and joint injuries or disease. This class is slower paced and will work on flexibility, mobility, coordination, and muscular endurance. This class is taught in the Leisure Pool at the YMCA in Quinte West.  Transportation from Brighton to YMCA in Quinte West can be arranged, seats limited.

Chair Yoga

This class is ideal for anyone who is not able to get down to the mat on the floor for some of the movements due to physical restrictions. Chair yoga still allows the participant to enjoy all the benefits of yoga by stretching and strengthening the body as you move through various poses, utilizing breath to leave you feeling relaxed and re-energized. The chair can also be used as a stabilizer for some standing poses to help build strength in the legs and helps to improve balance to prevent falls.

Gentle Hatha Yoga

Gentle Hatha Yoga classes include gentle stretches to increase flexibility, strength and balance. Breath work throughout brings relaxation and rejuvenation to the practices as well as meditation techniques to calm the mind. Through this flow of poses or postures, physical benefits are experienced. This is a slow paced class for all levels of student, including seniors and those new to yoga. Many posture modifications are offered to suit individuals’ needs.

Gentlefit

This class is geared for anyone who prefers a slower paced class and is designed to improve muscular and cardiovascular strength and endurance at moderate intensity with low-moderate impact activities. No high-impact exercises are performed in this class, making it appropriate for older adults.  A combination of strength and flexibility exercises using weights, stability balls, and balance exercises, with modifications given for individual fitness levels.

  • Thursdays: 1:00pm-2:00pm from September 14 to December 14, 2017

Pilates

Fundamental Pilates - Mat work and vertical exercises that help you gain strength, flexibility, and balance. Each class is designed to focus on good form and breathing pattern. Classes use props such as flexi-bands and flexi-balls to enhance your mat work experience.

Yoga

Yoga is done through the performance of poses or postures, each of which has specific physical benefits. Our yoga classes are designed with seniors in mind and are about creating balance in the body through developing both strength and flexibility.   

  • Wednesdays: 1:00 pm -2:00 pm at Civic Centre in Hastings.  $4 per class. 
    • Fee - $4.00 per class

Personal Distress Alarms (PDA)

A PDA is a small portable transmitter that is worn as a pendant or wristband and along with a small tabletop unit, provides clients with 24-hour support. In the case of emergency or distress, the client pushes the button on the PDA that sends a signal to the monitoring station, where trained operators immediately dispatch help.

Falls Prevention Program

These free group sessions are a combination of exercise and education.  They focus on exercises which help improve strength and balance and helping seniors develop strategies to help prevent falls and near falls. We offer this program in: Bewdley, Campbellford, Cobourg, Colborne, Hastings, Port Hope and Warkworth, Ontario.

Social & Recreation Groups

Indoor Walking Club

Walking is a great way to keep fit & healthy, walking with a friend or a partner is a great way to stay connected. With changes in weather bringing slick, icy sidewalks, finding a new venue for walking is sometimes the only way to keep up with a fitness program. The Walking Club provides a safe and warm environment for walkers. The ongoing partnership between Community Care Northumberland and East Northumberland Secondary School (Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board) provides a great solution to our challenging Canadian climate.  

  • In Brighton on Mondays to Thursdays:  6:00 pm - 8:00 pm.  October 3rd, 2016 to April 27th, 2017. Location: ENSS in Brighton.  Fee:$5

Knitting Club

Do you love to knit or crochet?  Join other knitting or crochet hobbyists to work on your own projects or projects for various local charities.  

  • In Hastings on Thursdays: 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm at Civic Centre in Hastings.  

Ladies’ Group

These groups are causal coffee groups designed to bring women together for conversation and fellowship. Occasionally guest speakers or special trips are organized. 

  • In Brighton: "The Buzz": Last Tuesday of each month: 1:30 pm to 2:30 pm at CCN's Activity Room in Brighton
  • In Cobourg: Wednesdays: 2:00 pm to 3:00 pm at Halycon Place
  • In Colborne: Tuesdays: 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm at CCN's Activity Room in Colborne
  • In Port Hope: (TBA)
     

Line Dancing

A line dance is a choreographed dance with a repeated sequence of steps in which a group of people dance in rows, all facing the same direction, and executing the steps at the same time. Our line dance classes are open to both men and women and are specifically aimed at seniors.  These classes provide an opportunity for participants to stay fit in a casual, social environment. 

  • In Hastings: Wednesdays: 10:00 am -11:00 pm at Civic Centre in Hastings.  $4 per class.

Men’s Group

These social groups are causal coffee groups designed to bring senior men together for conversation and fellowship. Occasionally guest speakers or special trips are organized. 

  • In Brighton: Thursdays: 10:00 am to 11:30 am at CCN's Activity Room in Brighton
  • In Campbellford: Every second Friday: 2:00 pm to 3:00 pm
  • In Cobourg: Thursdays: 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm at Cobourg Retirement Residence
  • In Colborne: Thursdays: 1:00 pm to at CCN's Activity Room in Colborne

Other Services

Blood Pressure Clinics 

A free opportunity for older adults to have multiple blood pressure readings taken using an automated measuring device by a trained Community Care Northumberland volunteer.  

We offer these clinics in: Bewdley, Cobourg, Ontario.
